Claes Oldenburg – Swedish Pop Artist

Claes Oldenburg was born January 28, 1929. He was born in Stockholm, Sweden and moved to the USA in his early childhood. Claes attended Yale and the University of Chicago. In 1960 he created a collection of works that helped establish his reputation. Claes uses ordinary objects to express his art in a soft manner. Since 1976 he has worked with Coosje van Bruggen and together they have over 40 large scale projects. Below is Trowel I, which was one of the first projects Bruggen and Oldenburg have done together.

Milk and Coffee Photograph

The photograph above, found on dpchallenge.com, is of coffee, with a drop of milk landing on it’s surface. Photography is a form of art and there are many different styles and techniques. This photo is really cool because it isn’t something I would ever think to capture as a photograph. I think it’s awesome how this photographer was able to find the beauty in something so unusual and random. This picture is a form of modern art. I really like the way the milk to form when it splashed against the surface of the coffee. I think picture is beautiful and amazing all around.

Dogs in Pop Art

A little after we created this site, we posted a blog about, Laura Sotka, an artist who’s subject for painting, is dogs. Laura and her partner, Holly Klay, paint dogs of all breeds, such as Basset Hounds, Great Danes, Dalmations, and more. They do pop art, contemporary art, stained glass, and photography. Their art makes for a great gift for a dog lover or a person who loves all types of art.

Takashi Murakami – Japanese Pop Art Sensation

Takashi Murakami works in both areas of areas of art such as digital and painting. Takashi uses icons from mass media and pop culture and changes them into his own sculptures. Some of these sculptures have even been up to 30 feet in height. He also specializes in Superflat paintings which is a combination of manga and anime. Manga is the Japanese word for cartoons. Anime is short for animation and is known around the world

Statue of Liberty- Pop Art

The painting above by Nikolai Bird, is of the Statue of Liberty. The statue stands, over 150 feet tall, on Liberty Island in the New York Harbour. The statue was designed by a man named Frédéric Bartholdi, as a gift to the United States. It was presented to the US in 1886.

I really like the way the blue contrasts with the statue. The two colors work well with each other and keep the painting simple, yet beautiful.

Eduardo Arroyo – Pop Artist from Spain

Eduardo Arroyo was born in 1937 in Madrid, Spain. He first started his career with journalism and soon moved on to doing art. At the beginning of his vast art career, he parodied his old ruler, Franco and his dictatorship. He also “poked fun” at the Spanish popular culture. Eduardo has several mediums such as an artist, a set designer, and a writer. His work is very popular and can be found across the world.

Alex Katz – American Pop Artist

Alex Katz is an American artist renown for his contribution to pop art. Alex Katz was born July 24 in Brooklyn, New York. From 1946-1950 he studied at The Cooper Union, New York and the Skowhegan School of Painting in Maine. Around 1955 Alex started to make collages. From 1974 to present, Alex has been working on various exhibitions such as Alex Katz Prints, Alex Katz: A Drawing Retrospective, Alex Katz: Twenty Five Years of Painting, Regarding Alex Katz, Alex Katz- In Your Face, and soon to come, Alex Katz. Alex currently lives in New York and has been living there for almost 40 years.

Sir Peter Blake – The Beatles Sgt. Pepper Album Cover Artist

Sir Peter Blake is a famous pop artist from England. He was born in the year 1932 and is still living today. Blake often paints images for commercials, advertisements, and wrestlers. He is most famous for painting album covers such as Sgt. Pepper in 1967 for The Beatles and Face Dances for The Who. Blake had his first single exhibition in 1960 and around 1961 he became a recognizable icon for emerging pop artists. Blake also won the 1961 John Moore’s Junior Award for his painting Self Portrait with Badges. His popularity exploded after he starred in Ken Russels’s film, Pop Goes the Easel. In 2002, Blake was given knighthood for his services to art.

Robert Rauschenberg – Combines

Robert Milton Ernest Rauschenberg is an American artist. It’s been said that his work helped inspire the Pop Art movement of the 60′s and beyond. He is most famous for his “Combines” of the 1950′s. Combines were where random objects of different shape and size were placed in innovative combinations. Rauschenberg has worked with painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, paper making, and performance. Robert studied Kansas City Art Institute and the Academie Julian in Paris France, before the legendary Black Canyon College in North Carolina. Robert Rauschenberg has had a long career in the arts, and he still continues to work from his home/studio in Captiva, Florida.
